Originally from Alijó, in the Alto Douro region, where he was born in 1965, Miguel Carvalho began his academic path at the now-defunct Escola Normal do Porto. He worked as a teacher for two years before joining the founding editorial team of the newspaper PÚBLICO as an intern at the end of 1989.
With a solid career in economic journalism spanning nearly a decade, he received several awards in the field and took part in training programs and internships in Portugal, Japan (International Studies and Training), the United States (German Marshall Fund), and Belgium. During this period, he published his first books—either solo or in collaboration—on the Douro region and the cultural memory of Port wine, one of his greatest passions.
He worked as a senior reporter for Diário Económico and returned to PÚBLICO in 1999, once again serving as a senior reporter. In collaboration with David Lopes Ramos, he launched the Fugas supplement and joined the editorial board of the newspaper in 2000.
Alongside his professional work, he completed a Law degree at the Faculty of Law of the University of Porto and earned a History degree from the same university’s Faculty of Arts. He has consistently published journalism on economics, regional development, industry, agriculture, and oenology—a calling deeply rooted in his Douro origins.
He closely followed key moments in international politics, notably the elections in Brazil since Lula da Silva’s victory in 2002. In 2013, he stepped down from the editorial board of PÚBLICO and began writing the weekly opinion column Memória Futura as Principal Editor.
In 2014, he received the Gazeta Press Award for his series of reports on World War I in Mozambique, produced with photojournalist Manuel Roberto. These reports inspired the book A Guerra que Portugal Quis Esquecer (The War Portugal Wanted to Forget, published by Porto Editora).
In July 2018, he became Editor-in-Chief of PÚBLICO, the newspaper where he built most of his career.
