Raquel Vaz-Pinto is a Researcher at the Portuguese Institute of International Relations (IPRI) at NOVA University Lisbon and a Visiting Associate Professor at the university’s School of Social Sciences and Humanities, where she teaches Asian Studies and History of International Relations.
She served as President of the Portuguese Political Science Association from 2012 to 2016 and was a consultant to the Board of Directors of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation from 2020 to 2022.
Raquel has authored several articles and books, including Os Portugueses e o Mundo, published by the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation, as well as A Grande Muralha e o Legado de Tiananmen: A China e os Direitos Humanos (The Great Wall and the Legacy of Tiananmen: China and Human Rights) and Para Lá do Relvado: O Que Podemos Aprender com o Futebol (Beyond the Pitch: What We Can Learn from Football), both published by Tinta-da-China. She also wrote the introduction to the new translation of George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, published by Penguin.
Her research interests include Chinese foreign policy and strategy, the U.S. and the Indo-Pacific, and leadership and strategy.
In the podcasting world, she co-hosted two seasons of [In]Pertinente – Política, a podcast by the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation, alongside Pedro Vieira. More recently, she has co-hosted As Amigas de Eleanor, a podcast by the Luso-American Development Foundation, recorded live and dedicated to extraordinary women throughout history, with a special focus on Eleanor Roosevelt.
Currently, she is a resident international politics analyst for SIC Notícias.
