Rui Massena had an introduction to music early in his life. At the age of five he played the first pieces and at the age of eight he created his first piano piece. With a degree in Orchestral Conducting, he has been working professionally as a conductor since he was twenty-seven years old, when he took on the Artistic Direction and the position of Principal Conductor of the Madeira Classical Orchestra, a position he held for 12 years.
Between 2001 and 2013, he premiered dozens of works and directed more than 30 national and international orchestras, in world-renowned concert halls, located in 14 countries, with emphasis on the Carnegie Hall in New York, and the Tonhalle in Zurich. In 2010, he was invited to lead the project in Music in the ‘European Capital of Culture - Guimarães 2012’, through which he founded the symphony orchestra ‘Fundação Orquestra Estúdio’, made up of musicians from 22 European nationalities. Throughout this time, Rui Massena wrote, directed, arranged in symphonic language compositions by numerous artists.
Since 2015 he started a solo career with his own positions, as Universal Music Artist, and released until April 2021, three albums and an EP. With about half a million monthly listeners on streaming platforms, his music is now enjoyed by people in more than 90 countries. Rui Massena was chosen as a contemporary global talent by the prestigious publisher ‘Deutsch Grammophon’.
Rui Massena's music is today alongside great world composers such as Philip glass and Ludovico Enaudi, with one of his compositions, Valsa, included in the compilation 'EXPO 1' by Deutsche Grammophon, which presents the music of the main neo-classical composers 'of today. In 2021, at the invitation of the publisher, alongside Maria João Pires and 15 other world-class performers and composers, she participated in the World Piano Day 21 festival, which was broadcast worldwide.
Today, Rui Massena continues to work as a conductor, composer, producer and performer, based in his studio, next to Granja beach, in the creative city of Porto. He directs and plays his music live in concert halls around the world.
